Extractions
What To Do After Extraction
- After extractions, gauze will be placed in mouth. Leave in place for 30 minutes.
- Extra gauze will be sent home with you. Use if bleeding continues. Slightly wet the gauze and place in a way so when biting, pressure is applied to extraction site/s. Again leave for 30 minutes. May need to be repeated several times.
- Avoid aggravating extraction site with tongue.
- Do not smoke, drink through a straw, or suck on candies for at least 3 days.
- Take it easy for the first 24 hours. No heavy lifting or repeated bending over.
- Eat a healthy, high calorie, soft food diet. Try to avoid getting food in extraction site/s.
- Avoid alcohol as it thins blood and can increase bleeding
- Use an older pillow case for first few nights as blood can mix with saliva.
- Ice packs can be used for swelling by having 20 minutes on/20 minutes off. Repeat as needed.
- If antibiotics/pain medications are prescribed, take as directed.
- Skip brushing/flossing in the extraction site for first 24 hours.
- After 24 hours day you may begin swishing very gently with prescribed mouth rinse or warm salt water (2 oz. very warm water and ½ teaspoon salt). Rinsing before 24 hours may disrupt clotting and cause post operative complications.
- Rinse every hour or more for the next few days.
- Alternate between Tylenol (acetaminophen) up to two 500mgs tabs and Advil (Ibuprofen) up to four 200mgs tabs every 3 hours or as needed, if it’s safe for you to take these medications.
